Running around town
What with all this working from home (oh yeah, I’ve been working from home; it’s amazing, you should try it), I find it really very easy to spend days on end in our apartment. Nick seems to think this is not an advisable method of life-living and has been encouraging me to step out the front door every now and again.
So today I tried running.
I am an amateur when it comes to running. And when I say amateur, I mean stumbling a couple of kays around town wearing the headband I took two weeks to crochet in knitting club. None of this: training for a marathon, or competing at a little world championship triathlon (I am looking with squinty eyes at certain members of Nick’s family).
I spent about 20 minutes trying to decide what to wear, and about 20 minutes running (also known as walking) around the lahti (bay/inlet that I keep thinking is a river). My shoes could almost be described as socks and my running top is a tiny little shred of material that is suitable for Australian summer. So I managed to get creative with aforementioned headband and my ski jacket, and I was actually pretty comfortable in the cold and wet. However, I did make two critical errors.
Error 1: I didn’t wear anything on my hands
Error 2: I didn’t turn the sauna on before I left.
I’ll know for next time.
I got a stitch half way around the lahti, which is exactly the worst time to get a stitch - when turning around or going ahead require the same distance to be covered - and my route afforded me the opportunity of taking in the full misery of death month. November is all the worse right now because we had a delightful cover of snow that’s been washed away by a persistent drizzle in above-zero temperatures, leaving these scattered clumps of dirty snow as a cruel reminder of the magical wonderland that was.
But on the whole, it was nice to get outside, and I’m hoping that I’m soon prevented from running by a return to pakkanen (I think it means freezing temperatures, but I’m not actually sure.)
